Wild Card Wednesday: The Show Must Go On!
9 days until opening night!
We’re all off book now and finally starting to play hard to get this show where it needs to be. It’s kind of thrilling; to be running around on stage being someone else for the first time in the better part of a decade. I’d forgotten how much I like being under the lights, and the little frisson that you get when everyone nails their lines, and how satisfying it is when you can make your director laugh for real… especially because she’s read this script probably more than 50 times.
Over the next week it will all come together, and we’ll put on one hell of a show!
The Cumberland Arts Centre is this cute building that used to be an old church. It’s right in downtown Clarksville, kitty-corner the University. The stage is built downstairs in what used to be the fellowship hall, and they tell me they can squeeze 90 people in there to enjoy dinner theatre. I would say “prove it”, but I’m afraid they just might! I give them full props for putting on great shows given the space they have and the pace at which they go up (one show goes up in just over a month)… most shows rehearse for at least 8 weeks.
Thanks to that pace the rehearsal schedule is DEMANDING. Every night, Monday-Friday, from 7:00 pm until 9:30 or 10:00. Get in, rehearse till you sweat, go home, do it again. Oof.
Especially ‘oof’ now that I’m getting up at 5:30 to go to work. I’m an old lady now, I need my sleep! I can’t fake it at this job, because the little fuzzies need the best care I can give them. So my social life is shot til the end of this show, for sure.
C is cheering me on though, and being such a darling about helping me run lines and get ready. I know he’ll be proud when he sees me up on stage for the first time ^_^Maybe he’ll even do a show with me one of these days??
At any rate– excited for the next few weeks, but I will be happy when it’s behind us and I can sleep again. And I think I’ll be taking a pass on the next show so I can recover… sorry, Christmas Pageant!
